What on Earth is a SIP Trunk and Why Do You Need to Know?

by | Feb 5, 2019 | Telecommunication

Session Initiation Protocol or SIP is part of the modern jargon associated with business phone systems. It is a rather complex way of talking about internet-based phone service. Rather than old-fashioned wires running from poles on the street, connecting to the building and running through the walls/ceilings/floors of your business, SIP uses the internet. But it is the SIP trunk that lets your internet-based system speak with the old fashioned landline systems.

Just consider that for a moment. It makes perfect sense to envision what is often called VoIP or voice over internet protocol connections. It is how we can use services like Skype to make voice calls. One computer calls another. But, what if your client on a land-based system with its lines and reliance on a phone network, tries to phone? How does the phone manage to interact with a computer? That’s the work of the SIP trunk.

There Are Distinct Benefits to SIP Trunking Solutions

Why would you use a SIP trunk if you have a functional system? Clearly, one reason is that so many businesses are making the switch to more reliable and cost-effective internet phone solutions. So, there is a lot of money for you to save if you choose this route, too. No more (or at least far fewer) fees associated with long distance calls because there is no long distance on the internet.

When there are international fees, they are going to be substantially smaller than traditional phone services.

Another of the remarkable benefits of the SIP trunk option is that it is easily and affordably scalable. It is not only scalable, though, but actually scalable in real time. As an example, let’s say your system needs 25 channels as a direct result of a sales promotion you offered. In other words, you need to have 25 lines available for staff to use in order to accommodate customer demand. With traditional phone services, you would always be limited to increments of 23. So, to expand would mean 46 lines required – most of which you pay for but don’t use.

With SIP services, you can bump up your number of channels by increments of one, meaning you can add a channel the moment you need (say, just before the promotion) and then cancel it out without any penalties once it is no longer needed.
